I agree (as I use this mode!)

Would not a better solution be to use Ctrl-K to cycle through the "Statistics" displays leaving the directory/file window intact? You would then be able to see all the info you need ("Global", "Branch" and "Directory") without disturbing your peaceful view of files/dirs in the main window.

I must admit I like the general idea though and I would use it frequently.
