I created a set of files with similar names and got similar results. I think it's sorting on the part before the LAST dot. When you try it with files, the reasoning is more obvious because the part it considers to be the extension is separated from the rest.

echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.2.beta"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.2 beta""
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.90"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.91"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.92"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.93"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.94"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.87b.hf1"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.87b.hf2"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.91.hf1"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.93.hf1"
echo sdsdsdsd > "xRelease Version 4.1.94.hf1"
