I am not sure I understand the issue correctly, but if you have deleted the default wildcards "*.*" from the end of the search string while at closed spell search, these wildcards are thereafter not automatically added back to the end. Hence, only an exact match is subsequently found at the active spell search, unless you manually add an asterisk to the search string or clear the search string first by Shift-Esc.
Can you clarify whether this is the behaviour you mean, or is it a different issue?
